Position Summary
Under limited supervision, this position is primarily responsible for assisting with database management, data dictionaries, troubleshooting, and system management. Database management responsibilities will include assisting with SQL configuration, backup and restores, security, performance tuning and storage planning for multiple oil and gas system and applications as well as working with the DBA team members to keep the enterprise abreast of the current database technology.
Key Accountabilities
- Understands the hardware environment and work with application owner(s) to set up and maintain application databases.
- Understands application specific database, data dictionaries and server security model and administrates user access to SQL servers and databases.
- Assists Sr. DBA on installation and configuration of MS SQL database software and databases on new server environment.
- Works with Sr. DBA on monitoring database management software upgrade, release, and patches; coordinates with application owner to fully test and upgrade new releases and patches.
- Assists Sr. DBA to develop, implement, test, and maintain backup and recovery plan on the databases.
- Understands the application database storage and retrieval needs and derives disk storage requirements.
- Monitors SQL server storage availability and database growth trends.
- Collaborates with infrastructure team to ensure sufficient disk space allocated for the databases.
- Monitors and reports complex database performance using selected system monitor tools; installs and maintains selected system monitor tools if needed.
- Collaborates with infrastructure team to improve performance or solve issues related to server hardware, server operating system, and SQL configuration.
- Schedules and performs database indexing to maintain and tune application database performance and improve process efficiency.
- Works with Sr. DBA to set up database DR replication for databases in the DR scope and tests to ensure the replication quality; participates and supports annual DR environment testing.
- Provides support to application team such as SQL reporting service and SQL scripts to extract and/or load data to support.
- Accepts and resolves, within defined SLA metrics, database and data related help desk requests to meet or exceed IT support expectations.
- Works with data warehouse team on ETL setup and implementation.
- Collaborates with IT infrastructure/network, Application and PMO teams to provide and/or develop current and future plans and activities including implementation/development of projects or any technology-based solutions to business driven needs.
- Actively supports and develops IT strategy and enterprise-wise standards or solutions.
- Recommends improvements to DBA team processes, practices & standards.
- Follows technical standards, guidelines and best practices in application usage, management, testing, data integration, and compliance. Insures all internal control and audit requirements are met.
- Develops and manages effective working relationships with other departments, groups, vendors, and personnel with whom work must be coordinated or interfaced.
- Performs within the guidelines of policies and directives at or above company performance.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Certificates, Licenses
- Bachelor’s degree, Technical Certification, or equivalent experience.
Experience
Up to 2 years MS SQL Server DBA experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- High level of problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to multi-task from project work to support work in multiple environments and applications.
- Strong knowledge of MS Office Suite.
- Knowledge of Infrastructure, Networking, Field Telecommunications and desktop productivity tools, processes and standards.
- Must understand application specific database, data dictionaries and server security model and administrate user access to SQL servers and databases.
- Must understand the application database storage and retrieval needs and derive disk storage requirements.
Work Environment
- Primarily office work environment.
- Routine work involves common office activities during a typical 9-hour day such as standing, sitting, walking, typing, twisting as necessary.
- May be required to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must follow all company safety policies, including when visiting field locations.
